January is such a shit month. Everyone is tired and full after Christmas and spring is nowhere near. We’re also all super poor. It’s such a waste of a month, to be honest. Shall we just cut straight to February? Or March?
I’m not an especially positive person, so I’m not great when it comes to these long winter months. I tend to be very sleepy, like a bear. A grumpy sleepy bear. If someone told me to ‘cheer up’ I’d probably maul them. Teeth, claws and all.
That said, I do have a few sure-fire things that never fail to cheer me up if I’m feeling slow.
01. A long hot shower.
I always neglect this one as a cheer up method. It’s so so easy and so nice and cozy and yet the build up – all the getting undressed and whatever – is such a pain in the arse. And what if you wash your hair? That’s annoying afterwards too. But it doesn’t have to be that hard. You don’t have to wash your hair, and the hot water will be so so worth it! Trust me, just go take a shower and everything will seem a little better.
02. A steaming mug of tea and a choccy biscuit.
An oldie but a goodie. Pop the kettle on, grab a bourbon, and sit quietly for a few minutes while it cools. Flick through a magazine, read a book, have a quick scroll through instagram – take a moment to drink your tea and refresh. Tea is so soothing and biscuits are so yummy. Damn.
03. Get outside.
Even if its just opening a window, fresh air can do wonders for the soul. December was a little too chilly for my liking, but it seems to have thawed out a little now. Perfect for a fresh five minutes outside, or even standing by an open window with your tea. Take a break and breathe.
04. A spritz of happy perfume.
When nothing can bring me out of a slump I turn to the big guns: a spritz of YSL Paris. Why? I wore it every single day without fail when I lived in Paris, and scent memory is a powerful powerful thing. It’s why I feel 14 again when I wear Marc Jacobs. YSL Paris is my go-to for perking myself up. It reminds me of sunny Parisian days and that I can achieve anything that I put my mind to. It’s great for studying too as it really pushes me through.
05. Dance it out!
This is great if you’ve been sitting still for a while, working or otherwise, particularly great if you’re writing essays or revising. Throw on a tune that really gets you going – I’m all about show tunes, power ballads or bangers from my emo phase – and dance it out for a bit. No one’s watching… unless they are in which case let them watch! Everyone’s jealous of you. You’re Beyonce and they should have put a ring on it.
