There, I said it. I’m abandoning VSCO. The blogger’s Instagram editing app of choice for some time now has pissed me off to the point of no return. Quite frankly, I’ve had enough. The reasons behind this less than amicable breakup are numerous. I’m bored of the filters, the constant changes, the sudden need to pay for everything (??) and everything else to be honest. Sick of it.
I’ve been saying for some time now that Instagram has become really stale for me. My photos started looking really drab and the quality and love just wasn’t there. It was, and kinda still is, really blood you frustrating.
Because that’s the first issue that I have with VSCO. The filters and editing tools are spectacularly average. They work, sure. They make photos look edgier or whatever, and people (including myself) smash Instagram with them every day. But I can’t help but feel that they’re also just a little bit shit. 90% of them turn your beautiful snap too blue or too orange. They make the image a tiny bit grainy, or flat, or just a bit meh. Sometimes you hit the jackpot and your image matches a filter brilliantly. Most of the time you’re turning the filter way down and endlessly fiddling about with exposure to get that classic insta vibe.
I dosvovered A Color Story a while ago, but it took me a while to get used to. Again, the filters weren’t really my cup of tea/I couldn’t really figure out where everything was and what I needed. Aside from new filter packs (which I massively recommend) its fabulously free. Unlike the majority of VSCO stuff. Has anyone started getting that really annoying pop up about having to pay for membership or something when they try copying their edits onto other photos? Ridiculous. CS at least lets you save a load of custom presets so you can use the same settings over and over in loads of different ways.
I’m so much happier with how things are shaping up over on insta, now that I’ve ditched VSCO. Here are two screenshots of my feed: the left is all edited over on CS, and the right is my old edit style on VSCO. While at first glance they seem pretty similar, and the subject matter obviously differs, there actually is quite a difference in style.
VSCO is a lot flatter, a lot darker and generally just a little drab. Sure I was in Durham so there was no beautiful sea to snap, but actually the sea kinda looked a bit shit using my classic presets. Everything is moody and boring, and the editing is crude. Each one took a while to perfect, and each is entirely different in what they needed to make them look passable.
On the left, however, is a series of photos that took about 5 minutes to edit, in total. Each has exactly the same filter on, on max, and each was taken using my humble iPhone camera. Some have a little bit of brightness added but that’s it. Look how much they pop! And just look at the sunset up there ^ – stunning with just a slight tweak. Easy peasy.
In short, VSCO has been officially deleted from my phone and iPad and I don’t think I’ll ever look back.
