Christmas is just under a week away and preparations are well underway. It’s a busy busy time of year, and one that can often feel a bit too hectic. Presents to buy and wrap, trees to decorate, food to prepare for the millions of distant family members and friends that will leave muddy boot prints all over the carpet. It’s an absolutely stressful time of year, really.

With that in mind, this post isn’t going to be about preparing for Christmas at all. No gift guides or recipes or party games from me, no sir. This post is really all about doing nothing in preparation for the big day.

This post is about putting your best socks on, grabbing yourself a mug of something naughty, and relaxing in front of the TV with a bowl full of popcorn.

I’ve teamed up with Butterkist to let you know that Christmas isn’t always about glitzy parties. Sometimes Christmas is all about hanging out with your boo, or family, or friends, or whoever, and just having some well earned time off. December is too cold to do anything too meaningful, anyway.

Number one on my list of Christmassy night in essentials is a decent film. Not just any old film will do. The trick is to pick something you’ve seen before, that you know makes you feel all sorts of emotions, and that leaves you with a glow brighter than the fire in the hearth. For me, the perfect cosy Christmas film is It’s A Wonderful Life. If you haven’t already seen it then WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE? It’s perfect. A rollercoaster of emotions and a happy ending. Bloody hell.

Now let’s talk mood – get those candles glowing and get that Christmas tree lit up. Turn down the lights and feel the warm glow all around you. You wan’t to be at a level where you’re about to fall asleep but also you’re a trooper and you can make it through and be stronger for it. You’re a cosy Christmas queen and no one can take that away from you!

On to the activities! A favourite in my family is a rousing Cards Against Humanity, but that might not be for you. 10/10 would recommend playing it with your parents and boyfriend and watching everyone feel uncomfortable. Easily up there in my favourite things to do.

But, as I say, that might not be for you. All chill. You can’t go wrong with a classic card game or an infinite game of monopoly (why do dads always ‘win’?). Ollie’s favourite card game is Slam! which is honestly a nightmare to explain so I won’t, but I can assure you that it’s fun. If not, my little sister’s boyfriend is a magician (legit magician!) so forcing him to do card tricks is equally enjoyable. Worst comes to the worst? Build a card tower and see how long it takes for the cat to knock it down!

Last but not least, let’s talk Christmas snacks! Mince pies, hot chocolates, red wine, camembert, and a huge bowl of popcorn ready for cosying down and hibernating through to Christmas morning. Butterkist is my no1 brand for popcorn and I can’t recommend their choc’mallow popcorn enough. It’s gooey and chocolatey and purely indulgent. I’m also completely obsessed with their Sweet & Salted bags – perfect for when you can’t quite make up your mind. Or maybe you’re a more of a traditionalist? No matter. You do you.  I won’t judge – Christmas is a time for being nice about popcorn choices. And hey, as long as everyone shares we’re all good here.

I can’t wait to get cosy on Christmas Eve with my family, a great Christmas film, a fab cheeseboard, and a huge bowl of popcorn to share.

Have a lovely Christmas! x

  • Now this is the kind of Christmas Eve I can get behind. Going out on Christmas Eve is not for me. Unless it’s a quiet evening out, like going to see a film or something. But going out for a party? Nah. Last thing I want is to be hung over on Christmas Day

  • ” putting your best socks on, grabbing yourself a mug of something naughty, and relaxing in front of the TV with a bowl full of popcorn.” I love this line!!! Honestly you have described what I’ve been doing most of break!

YES TO DOING NOTHING IN PREP WOHOO. I get stressed just reading posts about how much people are planning to do before Christmas?! Love it.

  • I like spending Christmas Eve at home. Normally we celebrate it all on that day, have a big dinner, lots of food and open presents at midnight, after the midnight mass. This tradition will remain for years.

  • You’ve just described my perfect Christmas Eve tbh! I do usually go out for an hour or two, for some food and a drink with my husband and our neighbours, but after that? It’s straight back home to pj’s, Christmas films, and indulgent treats like popcorn and mince pies. x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x
